ATNZ apprentice Janis Baker has been selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Programme (RYLA) in January 2020.
In the second year of her Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship, Janis is currently seconded to Trustpower Ltd and spends her days working on hydro power stations. She is thrilled to have been chosen for the weeklong live-in programme in Lower Hutt that is designed to help young people develop their teamwork and communication skills and fulfil their potential as leaders.
“I am hoping to gain a great variety of experiences out of RYLA. Mainly within myself by developing potential leadership skills. I am looking forward to meeting other likeminded people and the friendships that I will take away will be invaluable,” she said.
Janis’ participation on the course is fully sponsored by the Ngamotu Rotary Club in New Plymouth. She will attend alongside other talented young people from around New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, and across industries, cultures and ethnicities.
“I am very grateful to have the Ngamotu Rotary Club supporting me. Before RYLA, I hadn’t had anything to do with them – but going forward I am looking forward to being actively involved in different events that the Rotary Club organise or having their support to get more young people into more community based activities,” Janis said.
