Why mental health support matters in apprenticeships
At ATNZ, we know that success in an apprenticeship is about more than technical skills, assessments, and time on the tools. It is also about wellbeing, confidence, resilience, and having the right support when life becomes challenging.
That is why pastoral care is an integral part of how we support every learner.
Hayden’s story is a powerful reminder that mental health challenges can affect anyone, at any stage of life. Like many people, Hayden faced difficult times and learned the importance of speaking up, seeking help, and leaning on the support around him.
His message is simple but important: you do not have to struggle alone.
Mental health in the trades matters
Apprenticeships can be rewarding, but they can also bring pressure.
Learners may be balancing:
- New workplaces and responsibilities
- Study and assessments
- Financial pressure
- Family commitments
- Long hours and physical demands
- Uncertainty about the future
For some, these pressures can begin to affect mental health.
That is why it is so important to check in early, talk to someone you trust, and seek help when you need it.
Pastoral Care is key to Learner Success
At ATNZ, we believe learner support is not optional — it is essential.
Strong pastoral care helps learners stay engaged, overcome setbacks, and keep progressing toward their qualifications and career goals.
That is why our support model includes:
- Dedicated Account Managers who regularly check in with learners
- Practical guidance throughout training
- Help navigating challenges inside and outside of work
- Encouragement to seek support early
- A focus on wellbeing as well as achievement
When learners feel supported, they are more likely to succeed.

Hayden’s Message to Other Learners
Hayden’s story encourages other apprentices and learners to speak up if they are struggling.
Sometimes the hardest step is starting the conversation. But asking for help early can make a real difference.
Whether it is a manager, a family member, a friend, an Account Manager, or a professional support service, there are people ready to listen.
Supporting apprentices across New Zealand
ATNZ is committed to training skilled people for New Zealand industry — but just as importantly, we are committed to supporting the people behind those skills.
